History of the the Organic Viticulture Congress
The International Organic Viticulture Congresses evolved in Germany. The first congress of was held in 1985 in Geisenheim (D), organised by the German organic wine growers' association Ecovin. At this congress, the German standards for the production of organic grapes, grape juice, wine and champagne were launched.
The 5th congress, held in Bad Duerkheim, Germany, 1995, was the first one to be organised by all German organic producer organisations and Foundation Ecology & Agriculture SOEL, and it was also the first international organic viticulture congress. It dealt with questions of soil management and wine quality as well as farm management aspects.
The 6th congress was held in Basel, Switzerland, 2000 and for the first time in conjunction with an IFOAM Scientific Conference (IFOAM 2000).
The 7th International Congress on Organic Viticulture and Wine took place in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, prior to the 14th IFOAM Conference. The congress was presented by Canadian Organic Growers and IFOAM, in cooperation with the German organic viticulture organization Ecovin and CCOF- California Certified Organic Farmers.
At the IFOAM Organic World Congress in Adelaide, Australia, 2005, several papers on organic viticulture were presented.
The organisers of the 15th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC), to take place in Modena in June 2008, are planning to host a viticulture congress during the OWC.
