Development and test of cattle breeding strategies for organic agriculture in Switzerland and neighbouring mountain regions

In cattle breeding today, milk yields and nutrient content (especially protein) are very important. From the point of view of organic farming, health and constitution parameters are not being given enough attention.

  • Breeding options for cattle are to be developed and tested which allow for more attention being given to health parameters. Objectives such as a high lifetime yield based on basic feedstuffs and good adaptation to varying site conditions are likely to be priorities.
  • Additionally, possible interactions between genotypes and the environment are to be identified and, where applicable, strategies are to be developed which help utilize these interactions in practical breeding.
