in Organic Fruit founded!

At the occasion of the Second Meeting of Researchers in Organic Fruit held on Nov. 29 and 30 2000 at Frick Switzerland, the 24 participants from 14 institutions from 9 European Countries officially founded The European Group of Researchers in Organic Fruit EGROF. See list of members and institutions

The secretary of the group and contact address is Dr. Franco Weibel at the Research Institute of Organic Farming, FiBL, Ackerstrasse, CH-5070 Frick.

The group’s goal is to guarantee the information exchange between the increasing number of institutions and scientists active in organic fruit research.

Because the number of participants in the EG-ROF is restricted to people who are predominantly active in organic fruit research, there is always enough time for serious and interactive discussions of the research activities, the results and the methods used. Possibilities for synergy and co-operation can be detected and achieved between the different institutions and researchers.

Subjects and results of the conference:

Each institution gave an overview presentation of its recent and planned activities (see links below).
A half day session was dedicated to the latest research results focusing on lime sulphur applications in organic fruit growing and the registration situation in the different countries. In a discussion forum we intensively discussed the pros and cons of the use of lime sulphur in organic fruit growing. As a result we created a lime sulphur working group which is chaired by Marc Trapman (NL) (m.trapman@wxs-nl). The first task of the working group is to formulate a common position (in the name of the EG-ROF) about the use of lime sulphur in organic fruit growing and to find the answers on some points, which are still unclear, concerning registration, efficacy and side effects.

Varieties and Integrated Pest and Disease Management for
UK Organic Apple Production

Objectives:

To evaluate and refine an IPDM programme for organic apple production in the UK.
Cultural / Chemical / Biological controls.
To identify 4-6 varieties of apple which:
Have high fruit quality
A range of seasons (storage potentials)
Market suitability: Dessert / Culinary / Processing
Suitable for UK production
To determine the activity, persistence and efficacy of 8 organically acceptable fungicides for scab and mildew control.
These are calcium hydroxide and clay mineral / compost / plant / algal extract derivatives and mixtures: e.g: Biosan,, Mycosan , Ullmasud
To determine and optimise the efficacy of 6 organically acceptable foliar spray treatments for control of rosy apple aphid.e.g: Potassium Soap Quassia, Garlic Extracts

Registration of Plant Protection Products in the UK

Many of these plant protection products which are not approved by PSD are permitted by UKROFS (United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Standards) and the Soil Association (SA) – two major certifying bodies for organics in the UK.
